Pre Birth Acupuncture

Chinese Medicine places great importance of the preparation of a woman's body for childbirth. The idea that your body, mind and emotional self should be as ready as possible for the birth of your baby is so logical that it is often overlooked or not given due importance.

Recent research suggests that Acupuncture as a pre-birth treatment can prepare the body for an efficient delivery with less complications.

Treatment involves having a weekly Acupuncture session from 36 – 37 weeks. The treatment is based on a Traditional Chinese Medicine view point, pregnancy history and constitution and is focused on building energy and stamina, ripening the cervix and encouraging the baby to align itself in the ideal position for delivery.

A recent study conducted by midwives in New Zealand tested

this theory. Their study found a significant decrease in the

number of inductions, epidurals, emergency caesarean deliveries and

an increase in normal vaginal births (Debra Betts ‘Obstetrics in

Acupuncture’). Pelvic girdle pain was also found to be significantly

decreased by Acupuncture treatment prior to birth in a study of 386

women in the UK (British Medical Journal,(1) 2005).
